Retaining Walls in the Bay Area
Walls that hold the slope, manage the water behind them and give you usable level ground.
What we do
- Block, stone and concrete retaining walls
- Terraced slopes for planting or patios
- Drainage behind the wall so water pressure does not build up
- Footings and base prepared for the load
- Steps and walkways that connect the levels
What to know before you start
Drainage decides how long a wall lasts
A retaining wall is pushing back against soil, and wet soil pushes harder. We build in gravel backfill and drain pipe behind the wall so water has a way out instead of building pressure.
Height and permits
Many cities require a permit and engineered plans once a wall passes roughly 3 to 4 feet, and the exact threshold varies by city. We will tell you what applies to your property before we price the job.

Questions we hear
How tall can a wall be without a permit?
It varies by city. Many require a permit once a wall passes about 3 to 4 feet, and walls that support a slope above a structure or a driveway are often treated differently. Ask us and we will check your city.
Can a retaining wall fix erosion?
It can be part of the fix. We look at where the water is coming from and where it is going, because a wall without drainage often just moves the problem.
What materials do you build with?
Block, natural stone and poured concrete are the common options. The right choice depends on the height, the soil and how you want it to look.
